Biography
Jiebing Chen was born in Shanghai, began performing at age five, and graduated with top honours from Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She won first prize in China’s National Competition of Traditional Instruments, became one of the youngest musicians to receive the title National First Rank Performing Artist, and later earned a master’s degree in music theory from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Her international solo work included performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and orchestras and presenters in Europe and Asia.
Her cross-genre collaborations included Béla Fleck, Max Roach, Jon Jang, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, and L. Subramaniam, bringing the erhu into jazz, contemporary, world-music, and Indian-classical settings.
Her recording Tabla Rasa received a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album. She appeared on more than twenty internationally released albums, making her one of the most extensively recorded erhu artists of her generation.
Her educational work covered traditional erhu technique, orchestral performance, contemporary repertoire, cross-cultural collaboration, and improvisation.
