Biography

Chen Wenying graduated from Tianjin Conservatory of Music and studied with guzheng master Cao Zheng, with additional guidance from Zhou Yanjia, Sun Wenyan, and erhu educator Song Guosheng. She won first prize in the professional guzheng section of a national instrumental-music competition.

Her adjudication work included grading and examination activities associated with the Chinese Musicians Association, the Tianjin Conservatory of Music grading committee, the Chinese instrumental-performance grading system, and the China Nationalities Orchestra Society’s guzheng grading program.

Chen’s original guzheng solo Reveries East of the River was presented at a national guzheng seminar, released on VCD, and broadcast by China Radio. Her professional honours included the titles Heroine Pacesetter and Cross-century Literary and Arts Star.

In 2012, she taught a master class at the Tzar’s Village Music Festival and adjudicated at the Calgary Kiwanis Music Festival. In 2015, she received an Educational Achievement Award at the fifth China Children’s Golden Bell Music Competition; in 2016, she was recognized as a Canadian Outstanding Woman.

Her 2017 activities included professional adjudication for Shengshi Huazheng, participation in a Guinness-record guzheng event, and adjudication at the fourth International Zheng Conference in Osaka. She also received educational-guidance awards in 2017 and 2018.
