Biography
Liu Yang began studying erhu with his father, Liu Zice. He entered the Wuhan Conservatory of Music middle school in 1985 to study with Li Jianxiong and the Central Conservatory of Music in 1991 to study with Liu Changfu. He joined the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra in 1995, the China National Traditional Orchestra in 1998, and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in 2002, later serving as principal zhonghu.
His competition record includes a silver medal at the first national children’s instrumental solo competition in 1982, an excellence award in the professional erhu division of the 1995 Fulitong Cup international Chinese-instrument competition, and first place in the professional youth division of the 1995 Tianhua Cup national erhu competition.
He presented solo recitals in 1990 and 2000. His major projects included a concert and symposium commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of Huang Haihuai’s death, where he appeared as both soloist and principal; the Asian Orchestra, formed from Chinese, Korean, and Japanese musicians and toured in Korea and Japan with Liu as principal; and a concert marking one hundred years of the erhu.
His international tours reached more than ten countries and regions, including the United States, Germany, France, and Denmark. In 2003, his Hong Kong orchestral work included principal zhonghu responsibilities and professional service connected with the erhu community.
