Biography
Song Guosheng served as an erhu professor, master’s supervisor, and director of the Department of Folk Music at Tianjin Conservatory of Music. His professional service included vice-presidential and advisory work for the Erhu Society of the Chinese Musicians Association.
At the fourth Shanghai Spring national erhu competition, he received third prize and an Outstanding New Work Performance Award. Other honours included a Gardener Award, Tianjin Famous Teacher and Teaching Model recognition, the Tianjin Lu Xun Literary Creation Award, a national instrumental-music Lifetime Contribution Award, and a music-education award associated with Tianjin’s Hexi District.
Song published Erhu Performance Art, co-authored Introduction to Huqin Family Performance with Song Fei, and wrote numerous academic papers. He developed a comprehensive erhu teaching method, trained performers including Song Fei, and established a performance style described as “Song’s Qin Yun.”
He composed more than two hundred vocal, instrumental, and television works. Representative titles included The Elderly Couple Learning Selected Works of Mao, Journey through Henan, and Sister Yang’s Complaint. He was also among the first group of Tianjin music professionals to receive a State Council special allowance.
