Essence of Jin was presented at Gateway Theatre in Richmond on October 21, 2023 as the Shanxi-focused program of the Canadian Multicultural Arts Festival. The concert brought traditional Shanxi music together with contemporary music.
The program included ensemble, vocal, percussion, pipa, and guzheng performances, with several works based on Shanxi folk material.
Program highlights included Blooming Red Flowers in Shanxi, Dancing at the Sound of the Rooster, Ninety-Nine Bends of the Yellow River, the pipa and guzheng duet Spring River Flower Moon Night, and the percussion work Auspicious Golden Drums.
Other works included Dreams, selections from Qiao Family Courtyard, and the encore Impression of Chinese Music — Grand Suite.
